Art Deco
In this unit, we will closely look at the design and art elements of the "Art Deco" style. You will have a choice of the final project for this unit. Once you become familiar with the Art Deco style and elements, you will complete ONE of the following projects:
1. Design and draw an original stained glass window
2. Design and draw an original skyscraper
3. Design and draw an original superhero
4. Design and draw an original advertisement
All projects must use Art Deco elements. All projects will be large drawings using mixed media (colored pencils, crayons, and markers).

WHAT IS "ART DECO"?
Art Deco is both a functional AND decorative artistic style that emerged in the early 1920s and influenced all forms of creative design.
It is a decorative and architectural style of the period 1925-1940, characterized by geometric designs and bold colors.
The Art Deco style influenced the design of everything from door knobs to radios to chairs to bicycles to cars to trains to buildings.
So what are the elements of design that make Art Deco seem so unique, so stylish, and so cool? Some of the elements include: use of metal and steel, streamlined geometric shapes, vertical design, modern futuristic look, Industrial (machine made) looking design. vertical skyscraper style.

1. Finish watching introductory power point presentation and taking notes.
2. Look at examples of Art Deco fonts - practice writing in selected fonts. (sketchbook assignment)

1. Look at the geometric design of Art Deco stained glass window designs.
2. Practice drawing geometric designs for stained glass windows using typical Art Deco elements. (sketchbook assignment)

Activities - Day Four:
1. Look at the final project choices (in detail) by viewing a short power point presentation.
2. Decide which final project you would like to complete.
3. Begin preliminary (rough) sketches for your final project.

1. Finish your rough draft and get it approved.
2. Begin final layout on final paper - in light pencil first. Use a ruler for straight lines!!

No matter which project you choose to complete, you must have the following elements in your final art work:
1. Project must be completed on the large paper provided.
2. Project must include the use of crayon, colored pencil, and marker.
3. Project must display use of typical Art Deco elements (star burst / sun burst, vertical skyscraper style, use of geometric shapes, streamlined design, high contrast etc.)
4. Project must include some writing in stylized Art Deco font.
5. Projects must be neat, and demonstrate your understanding of the Art Deco style.
